Sharbot is a Sudanese drink known since ancient times. sharboat helps digest fats, remove heart burns and possible stomachache that occur from eating much meat. Sudan was one of the few predominantly Muslim countries that allowed traditional and Western alcoholic drinks.

STOCKHOLM APRIL 2025: Historically, Sudan was one of the few predominantly Muslim countries that allowed traditional and Western alcoholic drinks. Men drank millet wine, sharbot (an alcoholic drink from fermented dates), and araqi. In the 20th century, some Sudanese were influenced by Europeans and began drinking whiskey and beer. Sharbot is a Sudanese drink known since ancient times, and it is said that it came from northern Sudan, where it was drunk by the ancient Nubia in the areas around the Nile for thousands of years.

Ingredients

  • seedless dates
  • dried raw alpina
  • cardamom
  • cinnamon sticks
  • dried raw tamarind
  • fresh ginger
  • dried hibiscus
  • hot water

Sharbot Preparation

1. in a jar, add the seedless dates, dried raw alpina, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, dried raw tamarind, fresh ginger, dried hibiscus and pour hot water on top.

2. once it cooled down, put saranwrap on top and let it rest for two days. make sure not to let it rest for more than two days as the taste will change.

3. after the two days have passed, filter it and enjoy!
