Keir Starmer Resigns

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will stand down as Labour leader and prime minster. “I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power.” Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Manchester who will be sworn in as an MP today. If Burnham is the only candidate he can enter Downing Street shortly after July 16.

LONDON JUNE 22: U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will stand down as Labour leader and prime minster – setting out a plan for a replacement to be in office by September at the latest, or potentially as early as 16 July. Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Manchester who will be sworn in as an MP today after winning a by-election last week, is the favourite to replace Starmer.

“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power.”

Nominations for the Labour leadership, and the keys to 10 Downing Street, will open on 1 July and close by the time the parliament breaks for the summer on 16 July, until 1 September. If Burnham is the only candidate he can enter Downing Street shortly after July 16 and will attend an EU-UK summit in Brussels on 22 July.

Sir Keir Rodney Starmer (born 1962) is a lawyer who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 2024, and as Leader of the Labour Party since 2020. Prior to his premiership, Starmer served as Leader of the Opposition from 2020 to 2024. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015, and was Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013.
