KYIV APRIL 8: In a shocking announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese men fighting alongside Russia in eastern Ukraine. Zelensky also stated that Kyiv has “information” suggesting that many more Chinese nationals may be participating in Russia’s conflict. Kyiv has reportedly reached out to Beijing for a response.
Two Chinese nationals have been captured on the battlefield in the Donetsk region, allegedly fighting for Russian forces. Zelensky said that the captured men were found with Chinese passports, bank cards, and military uniforms.
Kyiv’s forces engaged in battle with six Chinese troops in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian president said on Tuesday, adding that Ukraine believes there are “many more Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units than just these two”.
Mr Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv that there is a difference: “North Koreans fought against us on the front in Kursk, the Chinese are fighting on the territory of Ukraine,” he said.
Mr Zelensky said he had ordered Ukrainian officials to obtain an official explanation from China, which he described as now being part of Russia’s war with Ukraine.
