Hundreds of civilians were reportedly killed when the Sudanese army carried out an airstrike on a market in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Many more were injured when the fighter jets carried out “an indiscriminate air raid,” according to the monitor.

KHARTOUM MARCH 25: A Sudanese war monitor has accused the military of killing hundreds of people in an air strike on a market in the country’s western Darfur region. The Emergency Lawyers group said the bombing of Tur’rah market was a “horrific massacre” that had also left hundreds injured. The Initiative for Justice and Peace stated it took place on Monday. They called it the “deadliest single bombing since the beginning of the war”. Videos posted on social media showed the smoking ruins of market stalls and bodies charred beyond recognition.

A military spokesperson denied targeting civilians, saying it attacked legitimate hostile targets. However, both the RSF and the country’s armed forces have repeatedly been accused of bombing civilian areas.

In the Darfur region, the RSF has deployed drones and the Sudanese army has used warplanes – often shelling RSF positions. Civilian deaths in bombing and shelling attacks have intensified in recent months with the escalation of fighting in the country’s brutal civil conflict.

Estimates vary, but it is said that at least 150,000 people have been killed by the fighting.
