KATHMANDU AUGUST 26: Floods from the Himalayan mountain range have caused a giant mudslide – with many dead and destroyed infrastructure in Nepal and Tibet. At least 157 people have died and hundreds are still missing. The death toll is expected to rise.
The flooding is said to have started in Tibet early on Wednesday and quickly caused the Bhotekoshi River in northern Nepal to rise. Dozens of villages along the riverbanks have been affected. In Nepal, 157 people have been found dead so far, local police said, according to Reuters.
At least 400 people have been reported missing, including Nepalese citizens, as well as people with Indian, American, Australian, British, Canadian, Malaysian, South African and Dutch citizenship.
