KHARTOUM JANUARY 21: Described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, the war in Sudan is nearing the end of its third year. The conflict began as a power-struggle between the two main factions of the military regime.
Since then, as many as 150,000 have been killed, millions have become refugees, and women and girls have fallen victim to “staggering” levels of sexual violence.
The UN’s new High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih has been visiting neighbouring Chad and Kenya which are sheltering many of the refugees.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. UNHCR lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Barham Salih is the 12th United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. He was elected by the UN General Assembly on 18 December 2025, for a term of five years, and assumed office on 1 January 2026.
