MINSK AUGUST 21: As Europe rallies behind Ukraine amid escalating tensions, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko — known ally of Vladimir Putin and host to Russian nuclear missiles—shocked the West by openly backing Iran’s “legitimate right” to develop nuclear technology.

Belarus is strengthening ties with Iran across all areas, including potential military-technical cooperation, as President Alexander Lukashenko hosted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Minsk.

During the meeting, Lukashenko called Iran a reliable ally, saying: “You have always been, and will always be, our friends.” Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to help Belarus counter Western sanctions and expand trade and political collaboration. Iranian president thanks Belarusian counterpart for support on nuclear issue, leaders vow to resist Western sanctions and accelerate economic projects.

Iran is “ready to cooperate” with Belarus “to neutralize illegal Western sanctions”, Pezeshkian added.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a stern warning to Europe against activating the 2015 JCPOA deal’s snapback mechanism. Iran’s stance has become bolder as nuclear talks with the U.S. remain stalled since the Trump administration bombed Iranian nuclear sites in June.
