ANNAPOLIS JULY 4: US President Donald Trump says he’s “very disappointed” in Russian President Vladimir Putin and doesn’t believe he’ll stop the war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters early Friday, local time, Trump confirmed he plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later in the day.
– “I am very disappointed with the conversation I had today with (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin because I don’t think he’s there,” he said. It comes after Trump told reporters on Thursday that a recent phone call with Putin yielded “no progress at all” toward ending the conflict.
This comes as Russian drone attacks ravaged Kyiv overnight, injuring 14 and damaging critical infrastructure. Trump also blamed Joe Biden for depleting US weapons stockpiles by sending arms to Ukraine, amid reports that Patriot missile shipments have paused.
U.S. attempts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine through diplomacy have largely stalled, and Trump has faced growing calls – including from some Republicans – to increase pressure on Putin to negotiate in earnest. On the campaign trail in 2023 and 2024, Trump said on dozens of occasions, in an entirely serious tone, manner and context, that he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of his return to the White House.
