KHARTOUM MAY 24: The United States has accused Sudan’s military of using chemical weapons during the country’s ongoing civil war and plans to impose new sanctions on its government. While the US didn’t give exact details on when or where the attacks took place, reports say chlorine gas may have been used in at least two incidents against the rival group, the Rapid Support Forces.
Chlorine gas can cause serious breathing problems and even death. The civil war in Sudan began in April 2023 and has caused massive destruction, killing tens of thousands of people and forcing over 13 million to flee. The signs of acute chlorine gas poisoning are primarily respiratory, and include difficulty breathing and cough; listening to the lungs will generally reveal crackles.
There may also be skin irritations or chemical burns and eye irritation or conjunctivitis. A person with chlorine gas poisoning may also have nausea, vomiting, or a headache. The US says this kind of weapon use violates international law and is calling on Sudan to stop.
