WASHINGTON DC JUNE 5: Donald Trump signed a sweeping new proclamation that will ban or partially restrict entry from nearly 20 countries, citing national security concerns. “I must act to protect the national security and interests of the United States and its people,” he says. The White House says the new ban is a way for the president to fulfill his campaign promise to “protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors who seek to come to our country and do us harm.”
The ban prohibits travel into the US for people from Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The travel ban comes into effect on Monday.
In addition, partial restrictions are being imposed on citizens from seven additional countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
According to a White House official, the president made the final decision to sign the executive order after an attack on a demonstration in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday. In a video on the blog Truth Social, Trump linked the new ban to Sunday’s attack in Boulder, Colorado, which injured 12 people. The arrested suspect is from Egypt, a country not on the list.
