KHARTOUM MAY 29: Destroyed bridges, blackouts, empty water stations and looted hospitals across Sudan bear witness to the devastating impact on infrastructure from two years of war. Authorities estimate hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of reconstruction would be needed.

Residents of the capital Khartoum have to endure weeks-long power outages, unclean water and overcrowded hospitals. Their airport is burnt out with shells of planes on the runway.

A serious consequence of the Rapid Support Forces’ terrorist activities is that a cholera epidemic has broken out in the area, due to the RSF’s deliberate targeting of water infrastructure. A new cholera outbreak in Sudan has killed 172 people and sickened more than 2,500 over the past week, authorities said Tuesday.

According to Joyce Bakker, the Sudan coordinator for Doctors Without Borders, the alarming spike began in mid-May, with MSF teams treating almost 2,000 suspected cholera cases in the past week alone. Bakker said MSF’s treatment centers in Omdurman are overwhelmed and that the “scenes are disturbing.” “Many patients are arriving too late to be saved,” she said.

Calls have been raised to forcibly seize the assets of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, a former camel herder from Chad, now leader of the Rapid Support Forces, to pay for the reconstruction of Sudan. Something that, in that case, must include international forces such as the United States, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
