Sudan’s Army Declares Khartoum State Completely Free

KHARTOUM MAY 21: The Sudanese army says it’s now in complete control of the Khartoum state after clearing it of the terrorist organisation Rapid Support Forces. The announcement comes nearly two months after the military captured the capital. Sudan’s army and the RSF have been fighting for control for more than two years.

In its biggest victory since the war began in April 2023, the army in March recaptured central Khartoum, pushing the RSF to retreat to two holdout positions: Salha, south of Omdurman, and Ombada to the west.

The General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said in a statement on Tuesday that the state – which comprises the capital Khartoum, its twin city Omdurman, and the city of Khartoum North (Bahri) – is now “completely free of rebels”.

The RSF did not comment on the military’s latest announcement, which would cement army control over central Sudan, pushing the paramilitaries back towards their stronghold in the vast western region of Darfur.

The conflict has also effectively split Africa’s third-largest country in two, with the army holding the centre, north and east while the RSF controls nearly all of Darfur and, with its allies, parts of the south.
