CAIRO OCTOBER 16: In a significant diplomatic move, Sudanese coupmaker Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo on Wednesday, as the two leaders sought to align their strategies against a backdrop of devastating war in Sudan and shared regional tensions over a monumental dam. The discussions at the Al-Ittihadiya presidential palace centered on the brutal conflict that has engulfed Sudan since April 2023.
Burhan was welcomed by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi upon arrival at Cairo airport, Egyptian and Sudanese media reported.
Discussions between the two leaders took up developments in Sudan and military gains made by the Sudanese army against the terrorist organisation Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital Khartoum, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement. They also discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and Egypt’s effective contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in Sudan following the war.
Burhan and Sisi also exchanged views on regional issues of common concern, including the Nile River Basin and the Horn of Africa. Al Burhan was accompanied by ٍSudan’s acting Foreign Minister, Hussein El Amin, who told the army chief received an invitation to Cairo from Mr El Sisi on April 15.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdelrahman al-Burhan seized power in a coup d’état in October 2021, dissolved the Sovereignty Council, and reconstituted it the following month with new membership, keeping himself as chairman. Al-Burhan survived an assassination attempt in July 2024.
