CAIRO MARCH 27: Six tourists are dead and five more are trapped after a submarine sank off the coast of the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada. Dozens of Russian holidaymakers were on board the vessel which sank in the harbour about a kilometre off the Egyptian coast on Thursday. Five are still trapped inside the submarine after it is believed to have hit a reef as a desperate rescue effort tries to save the stuck tourists.
The Russian consulate in Hurghada said the submarine, named “Sindbad”, had 45 Russian tourists on board in addition to crew members. It said four people had died. “Most of those on board were rescued and taken to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada,” the consulate said, adding that the fate of several tourists was still being clarified.
Local media reported that rescue teams had saved 29 of the 45 passengers.
Hurghada is a coastal city that serves as the largest city and capital of the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt. Hurghada has grown from a small fishing village to one of the largest resort destinations along the Red Sea coast. Holiday resorts and hotels provide facilities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, yachting, scuba diving and snorkeling.
