The Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, a region of Sudan, was attacked on Friday evening. At least 64 people are reported to have been killed and 89 injured, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus wrote on the X platform. The attack damaged the hospital’s paediatric, maternity and emergency departments. Two nurses and a doctor, as well as several patients, are said to have died in the attack. As a result of the attack, operations at the hospital have been halted.

RSF claims that the Sudanese army carried out the attack, which is denied by the army, writes the AP news agency. However, two military sources tell the AP that an attack on a nearby police station has been carried out. The Emergency Lawyers group has called for an independent and transparent investigation and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

According to the WHO, there have been 213 attacks on health facilities since the start of the conflict three years ago. Friday’s attack brings the death toll from attacks on health facilities to over 2,000.
