Khartoum Airport Faces Third Day Of Drone Attacks

There’ve been fresh drone attacks targeting the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Khartoum International Airport was targeted by drones ahead of its planned reopening for domestic flights. Army air defences intercepted the drones, and there are no confirmed casualties or damage. It’s the third consecutive day of strikes on the airport. The attack by the Rapid Support Forces came as the group seeks to maintain pressure against Sudan’s military while the deadlocked conflict grinds on.

KHARTOUM OCTOBER 23: There’ve been fresh drone attacks targeting the Sudanese capital Khartoum, including on Khartoum International Airport was targeted by drones ahead of its planned reopening for domestic flights, more than two years after the outbreak of Sudan’s civil war. Army air defences intercepted the drones, and there are no confirmed casualties or damage. It’s the third consecutive day of strikes on the airport, which briefly re-opened on Wednesday after more than two years. The attacks are being blamed on the terrorist organisation Rapid Support Forces, which the Sudanese army has been fighting since April 2023.

Witnesses told the AFP news agency that they heard two drones over Khartoum at about 4am (02:00 GMT), before explosions went off. Another witness meanwhile said he saw the drones heading towards the airport, adding that he heard explosions shortly afterwards.

The airport has come under repeated drone attacks blamed on the RSF since Tuesday. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan said “both sides seem to be stepping up the use of drones, with the RSF using them here in the capital, Khartoum, to target facilities such as the airport”.

The attack by the Rapid Support Forces came as the group seeks to maintain pressure against Sudan’s military while the deadlocked conflict grinds on.
