TEHRAN OCTOBER 21: A leaked video of Ali Shamkhani’s daughter’s lavish, hijab-free wedding at Tehran’s Espinas Palace has ignited fury in Iran — not just for its gold-plated excess, but for its timing. The footage surfaced as authorities rolled out a new hijab crackdown with 80,000 enforcers and mass business closures targeting unveiled women. For many, the wedding is not just a party but a symbol of a regime that polices modesty and poverty for the public while its own elite celebrates in luxury behind closed doors.
The clip sparked outrage because women in the function, including the bride, were seen wearing revealing dresses. On 16 September 2022, 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, died in a hospital in Tehran, Iran, under suspicious circumstances. The Guidance Patrol, the religious morality police of Iran’s government, had arrested Amini for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. She was severely beaten and that she died as a result of police brutality, which was denied by the Iranian authorities.

Ali Shamkhani is an Iranian naval officer and politician who served as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran from 2013 to 2023. He is a member of the Expediency Discernment Council of Iran and political advisor of the Supreme Leader of Iran since 2023. And so it is his daughter who is getting married in a dress that an ordinary poor woman would have been imprisoned and whipped for – Mhasa Amini, was tortured to death for not wearing her hijab “properly”.
