Global Ocean Summit Opens In Nice

World leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives, and scientists are convening in Nice from 9 to 13 June for the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. The UN Ocean Conference seeks concrete plans and funding to address what organisers call a marine “emergency”.

NICE JUNE 9: A global summit on the dire state of the oceans opened Monday in France, with demands to ban bottom trawling and expand marine protections. The UN Ocean Conference in Nice seeks concrete plans and funding to address what organisers call a marine “emergency.” The call for unity comes as nations clash over a plastics treaty and the US resists deep-sea mining rules.

World leaders attending the UN Ocean Conference in Nice have been told to come up with concrete ideas – and money – to tackle what organisers call a global “emergency” facing the neglected seas. On the eve of the summit, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that leaders must act now: “The planet can no longer tolerate broken promises.”

Participants arrive amidst alarming findings: only 2.7 % of the world’s oceans are effectively protected—far below the international goal of 30 % by 2030.

The conference’s official declaration will aim to turn rhetoric into tangible commitments, culminating in the “Nice Ocean Action Plan” and pushing for broader ratification of the 2023 High Seas Treaty.
