KHARTOUM MARCH 27: Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has declared the capital ‘free’ after returning to the presidential palace in Khartoum. Burhan’s forces have made major gains against Rapid Support Forces in recent days. Earlier they regained control of Khartoum’s airport and a weapons manufacturing centre.

On Wednesday, the army said it had gained control of Tiba al-Hassanab camp south of the capital, which it described as the RSF’s last base in central Sudan

“It is over,” said Burhan as he spoke at the presidential palace earlier in the day before arriving at the city’s airport to celebrate with troops. The recapture of the capital by no means signals an immediate end to the civil war. RSF still control large swaths of land across the country, notably in the western Darfur region.

Sudan’s official news agency, SUNA, reported that Burhan arrived to Khartoum via the Khartoum International Airport, indicating that the SAF has taken back the airport, another location that has for almost two years been under RSF control.

Recent army gains in central Sudan, retaking districts of the capital and other territory, come as the RSF has consolidated its control in the west, hardening battle lines and threatening to move the country towards a de facto partition.
