Hospital Attack: UN Calls For Protection

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the March 20 attack and called on all parties involved to respect international humanitarian law. The Al Daein Teaching Hospital was attacked on Friday (20/3) evening. At least 64 people are reported to have been killed and 89 injured.

AL DAEIN MARCH 25: The United Nations has condemned a drone strike on Al Deain Teaching Hospital in Sudan’s East Darfur state that reportedly killed at least 64 people, including children and healthcare workers.

The Al Daein Teaching Hospital was attacked on Friday (20/3) evening. At least 64 people are reported to have been killed and 89 injured, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus wrote on the X platform. The attack damaged the hospital’s paediatric, maternity and emergency departments.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the March 20 attack and called on all parties involved in Sudan’s conflict to respect international humanitarian law, which protects civilians, medical personnel, and health facilities.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 200 attacks on healthcare facilities have been verified since April 2023, resulting in over 2,000 deaths.

Dujarric also cited reports from the UN human rights office stating that around 500 civilians were killed in drone strikes between January and mid-March.
