Flash Flood Hits Nepal-China Border

At least eight people were killed and over two dozen were missing after the Bhote Koshi River flooded. KATHMANDU JULY 8: At least eight people were killed and over two dozen were missing after the Bhote Koshi River flooded, washing away the “Friendship Bridge” that links China and Nepal, officials said on Tuesday. There had been no heavy rainfall in the immediate area of the river in the preceding 24 hours, but weather forecasting experts said the flood might have been the result of an overflowing glacial lake in Tibet, where torrential rain had fallen.

The heavy rainfall in Tibet is suspected to have triggered the flood, although the exact cause remains under investigation. Authorities have issued warnings to residents along the Trishuli River to stay alert.

Officials have confirmed that 18 individuals, including 12 Nepalis and six Chinese nationals, are missing following the flood. The missing include three police officials and nine members of the public, reported news agency ANI.

Police had recovered eight bodies, none of whom had been identified so far, Nepal Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire told.

The flooding has caused significant infrastructural damage, washing away vehicles and sections of the Pasang Lhamu Highway. This has cut off vehicular access to Rasuwagadhi, severely disrupting connectivity and making rescue operations more challenging.
