At least 26 people have been killed on the Pakistani side, while India reports three deaths on its side. India claims it targeted militant training camps, but Pakistan says civilians and religious sites were hit, calling it an “act of war.”
Totally at least 43 people were killed in India and Pakistan during clashes on Wednesday after India launched missile strikes on its longtime adversary on Tuesday. Airlines cancelled and diverted flights, world leaders warned against an escalation of military conflict.
The fighting came two weeks after New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing an attack on the Indian-run side of disputed Kashmir, which Pakistan denied.
Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has been addressing the nation following an overnight missile attack by the Indian air force. India “will have to suffer the consequences” of its airstrikes, Sharif said. Shehbaz described the strikes as “cowardly”.
“Perhaps they thought we would retreat – but they overlooked the fact that this is a nation built on courage.”
Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir denoted only the Kashmir Valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range.
