Sudan’s RSF have declared the formation of a rival government. The group declared the formation of the “Government of Peace and Unity”. Meanwhile, Europe pledged billions in aid to Sudan. Could this be the background to Hemedti’s interest in forming something that could be mistaken for a legitimate government? To get hold of the billions in funds?

KHARTOUM APRIL 16: Sudan’s RSF have declared the formation of a rival government to the country’s armed forces – two years into a war that has become the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.

The leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the former camel herder Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, said the group was “building the only realistic future for Sudan”. The UN estimates that more than 400 people have been killed in recent attacks by the RSF, citing “credible sources”.

Going into its third year of deadly conflict, both the army and RSF have been accused of war crimes, including genocide and mass sexual violence. The Rapid Support Force (RSF), has announced a parallel government to rival the army-backed administration it is battling. The RSF declared the formation of the “Government of Peace and Unity,” as the war enters its third year.

Meanwhile, senior diplomats and aid officials from the UK, Germany, France, the European Union and the African Union gathered at the one-day conference hosted in London, where they called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The EU and its member states pledged €522 million ($590 million) in aid for 2025. United Kingdom announced £120 million (€141 million) in funding for the coming year.

Could this be the background to Hemedti’s interest in forming something that could be mistaken for a legitimate government? To get hold of the billions intended for the people of Sudan?
