KHARTOUM APRIL 5: Devastated by war, Sudan is witnessing a massive gold rush. Billions of dollars’ worth of gold is flowing out of Sudan with production and trade surpassing pre-war levels. But instead of helping Sudan regain its feet, the gold trade has been enriching the warring generals and further propelling the fight.

Money from the illegal trade is assisting the RSF and the Army pay for drones, guns and missiles that have killed thousands across the country since the beginning of the civil war in April 2023. The current civil war pits the Sudan army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, against the terrorist organisation Rapid Support Forces, led by the former camel herder Mohamed Hamadan Dagalo, popularly known as Hemedti.

The trade, which involves tens of thousands of people and has drawn in people from countries beyond Sudan and Egypt, is part of a web of organised crime that runs along the border.
